Total Solar Eclipse in Oregon

  • Bend, OR USA

This is a "one-of-a-kind" event. A total solar eclipse is going to go across the United States on August 21st, 2017. The maximum eclipse will start in the Continental U.S. at the Oregon Coast and will go back over the Atlantic Ocean in South Carolina. This workshop will go to the wilderness of Eastern Oregon, a spot where there is likely to be no cloud cover, and is far away from major cities

West Marin and Point Reyes - September

Point Reyes covers quite a bit of territory. We may photograph both inside and outside of the park. The subject matter we may photograph includes forests, beaches, old buildings and plant and animal life. We will visit the best places to photograph during this time of year, based on the time of day and weather conditions.

Early Fall in Wine Country

The show of colors should be just beginning in wine country. There will be shades of yellow, orange, red, and even some green. We will follow an itinerary that gives us the best odds of finding colorful vineyards on this particularly day.

Spring in Wine Country (Saturday)

Spring will be in full force at this point. The vineyards will be in various shades of green and many flowers will be blooming as well. In the late afternoon, we may find vistas of vine covered hills bathed in "rim light". It is a very good time to photograph vineyards, and the itinerary will maximize our ability to capture great scenes.

Northwest Sonoma County

If we get a normal wet winter, the Rhododendrons should be at their peak about now. Their flowers make great subjects in the redwood forests. Salt Point is also interesting with its petrified sand beaches and "secret" waterfall that runs into the ocean. We may not even spend much time in these parks since there is a lot of things to photograph along the way and back.

West Sonoma County

One of my more favorite parts of Sonoma County. This area especially looks good green and wet, or yellow and dry. On this particular outing, everything will be very green. The first landscape workshop I ever led was to this area, for good reason.

Bowling Ball Beach & Point Arena Lighthouse

Bowling Ball Beach is an almost mythical place to photographers around the Bay Area. It is not easy to find and it is not easy to get to once you find it. You also have to look at the tide tables to figure out the better times to be there (photographically speaking). This workshop handles all of that. We will also visit the Point Arena Lighthouse and other points of interest along the way. We will start early, since the driving distance is long.

Winter in Wine Country (Saturday)

After fall, winter is actually one of my favorite times to photograph wine country. There are hints of color everywhere at this point, and the structure of the vineyard supports and oak trees make for great photographs. We will follow a pre-scouted itinerary for the best possible photographs at this time of year.

Death Valley & the Eastern Sierras

Death Valley is the largest national park in the continental United States. You could easily drive for hundreds of miles within the park boundaries, while looking for good spots to photograph. In this workshop, I can take you directly to these places. After a few days in the relative warmth of the desert, we will go north on one of my favorite roads in California, Highway 395. We'll follow in the footsteps of Ansel Adams at many of the places we visit.

Sonoma County Backroads

If you think there is nothing to photograph in Sonoma County's interior when most of the vineyards have lost their leaves, you'd be wrong. Take a break from the holiday rush to explore some beautiful back roads. I love shooting landscapes at this time of year. There won't be any more afternoon workshops for a couple of months after this (unless you want to create one, look under "Private Classes" for details on how to create your own workshop).

Capturing the Spirit of Point Reyes

This class will be taught under the auspices of the Point Reyes National Seashore Association and their Field Institute. We will stay the entire weekend in the park photographing a wide variety of environments. What we photograph will depend on the weather. I will also talk a lot about capturing the "spirit" of things and not just their surface. You will register for this course through the PRNSA website.

Late Fall Color in Wine Country

This will be the last chance to see a lot of color in wine country. There will be shades of yellow, orange, and red. Some vineyards may even be fully spent by now, depending on the microclimate and grape varietal. We will follow an itinerary that gives us the best odds of finding colorful vineyards on this particularly day.
