Bowling Ball Beach & Point Arena Lighthouse

COST: $99.00

The Place

This workshop is timed to take advantage of the tides in conjunction with the sunset to allow very good conditions for photographing this beach.

This workshop will take us into a very beautiful part of the coast in southern Mendocino County. We will start by photographing at the Point Arena Lighthouse and then we will go to "Bowling Ball" beach to photograph the unique rock structures on that beach. We will photograph until after nightfall during the "blue hour". This workshop is carefully timed to take advantage of the sunset time in conjunction with low and high tide.

Our Focus

We will primarily focus beach scenes, the Point Arena Lighthouse and the star attraction will be the rocks at Bowling Ball beach.

General Topics that will be Covered

We will focus on building up your technical foundation, including:

  1. Setting color and image quality settings for best results
  2. Focusing, depth of field, and image sharpness
  3. Getting the right exposure through the use of histograms
  4. Learning how to use exposure compensation to get better results
  5. How to identify strong compositions
  6. How to improve contrast and clarity in difficult lighting
  7. And, the location of several beautiful places to photograph

This particular workshop will focus on how to photograph in the "blue hour". In addition, we will focus on how to capture shadow detail in high contrast scenes without losing detail in highlights. If there are overcast conditions, we will go over the proper exposure settings to get vibrant pictures. We will also do long exposures that make the ocean waves to appear to be mist.
