West Sonoma County

COST: $99.00

The Place

This workshop will follow the "really back roads" of Sonoma County.

To celebrate the beginning of spring, we will be photographing along my favorite road in all of Sonoma County. Among the things we will do is visit a bakery in Freestone (to start things off properly). We may then visit a little-known old growth redwood forest, an old ranch with items on display from the earliest settlers of the area. We will photograph the hills of West Sonoma County with wide vistas that include views of the Pacific Ocean. We will end the day at one or two beaches along the Sonoma Coast to photograph the sunset or the sea stacks along the shore.

Our Focus

We will primarily focus on the landscape, as well as redwoods, and still-lifes of old artifacts and buildings, we may also photograph wildflowers and the hills in this region. The weather can range from a sunny cloudless day to steady rain this time of year. We will mostly photograph near our vehicles and drive on good roads.

General Topics that will be Covered

We will focus on building up your technical foundation, including:

  1. Setting color and image quality settings for best results
  2. Focusing, depth of field, and image sharpness
  3. Getting the right exposure through the use of histograms
  4. Learning how to use exposure compensation to get better results
  5. How to identify strong compositions
  6. How to improve contrast and clarity in difficult lighting
  7. And, the location of several beautiful places to photograph

This particular workshop will focus on how to photograph in hazy light/harsh light. In addition, we will focus on how to capture shadow detail in high contrast scenes without losing detail in highlights. If there are overcast conditions, we will go over the proper exposure settings to get vibrant pictures.
