The coastline of Sonoma is both dramatic and beautiful. This workshop may cover an area ranging from the mouth of the Russian River in the south, to The Sea Ranch in the north. We are going to start a little earlier than usual, since there will be a bit of driving involved if we go all the way up to the county line. There are a variety of subjects to photograph, ranging from broad sandy beaches to rocky cliffs and rocky surf, as well as the forests and hills. Our itinerary will be fluid, based on weather conditions on the day of the workshop, but we will be at or near the coast the whole time. Among the areas we may visit are Salt Point State Park and the Kruse Rhododendron State Reserve (the flowers should be at their peak).
We will primarily focus on the shoreline landscape, we may also photograph buildings, wildflowers, and the interior hills found in this region. The weather can range from a sunny cloudless day to foggy at this time of year. We will mostly photograph near our vehicles and drive on good roads.
This particular workshop will focus on how to photograph in hazy light/harsh light. In addition, we will focus on how to capture shadow detail in high contrast scenes without losing detail in highlights. If there are overcast conditions, we will go over the proper exposure settings to get vibrant pictures.
We will do our best to exploit the day's weather conditions, whether it turns out to be a dramatic sky, or it is misty and foggy, which is often the case.
